Unified glare rating(UGR) is used to measure and evaluate the direct glare of the entire luminaire in a given environment . Ranging from 5-50, the lower the number, the lower the glare. Led lights with high glare will affect the vision of seeing objects, lead to visual discomfort and even make people can't distinguish the task objects at all.
According to the European Standard EN 12464, there are different UGR regulations regarding different indoor lighting applications. The UGR index is described in 13,16,19,22,25,28. Some UGR reference values relating to corresponding applications are listed as follows.
UGR < 13 – the glare is so discreet and unnoticed
UGR ≤ 16 Technical drawing, Precision work e.g. decorative grinding, hand painting; Colour inspection
UGR ≤ 19 Reading, writing, training, conferences, computer-based work, Laboratories ,Watch making (automatic)
UGR ≤ 22 Craft and light industries, Leather dyeing (machine), Control platforms; control panels.
UGR ≤ 25 Heavy industry, Automatic fabric printing, Saw frame, Work at joiner's bench, gluing, assembly
UGR ≤ 28 Railway platforms, foyers
EN 12464 states the maximum UGR in offices is UGR19 that is an important factor to ensure low glare and visual comfort.
