What You Need to Know About Human-Centric Lighting

2019/07/29

What is Human Centric Lighting (HCL)?

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a lighting solution intended to improve a person’s well-being, mood, and health by varying the Correlated Color Temperature (CCT). HCL solutions are designed to mimic the lighting effects and illumination of natural sunlight. Evidence is growing that light doesn’t just help us see – it impacts how we feel and behave. HCL aims to use in various applications such as healthcare, education, workplaces, retail, and residential applications, among others, also known as Circadian lighting or lighting for health. By tuning light to support our circadian rhythms and emotional needs, we can promote human comfort, wellbeing and performance.

How does HCL affect human being?

Human bodies are attuned to the light of the sun and the effect of the circadian clock extends to sleep, mood, alertness, productivity and health, far beyond the visual perception of light. Lighting can have a noticeable effect on your productivity. For example, a study found that when primary school students are exposed to (6000K-100fc average maintained) lighting, they performed 36% better at oral reading fluency, compared to 17% with control lighting. More research is underway to expand our understanding of such effects.

In other words, working in the right lighting conditions help you stay active, focused, and even motivated. Apart from issues concerning productivity, studies have discovered that poor lighting can result in eye strain, fatigue and aching, which in turn is likely to lead to deterioration in performance.

Why now?

HCL starts very slowly, partly because adjusting lighting settings was difficult and costly and partly because of a lack of HCL standards. Now, these problems have solved, HCL control capability is now embedded into LED fixtures with protocols, such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, DALI DT8…, and communicating directly to the led driver. And the sensor ready standard now includes a standardized protocol for tunable white light, allowing it to be controlled wirelessly.

The global HCL market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 37.2% and 35.2% in terms of volume and value, respectively during the forecast period 2018-2024. And HCL market value will reach $3.91 Billion by 2024, reported by BIS Research.

Are you ready to for the era of HCL?

HCL is one of the biggest trends in residential and commercial lighting. Now, the standards were settled, and we have a well-understood, HCL opens a floodgate of opportunity for lighting manufacturers, developers and designers. Kinglumi’s vision aligns that we can work with you to open new markets of HCL. Are you ready to explore what’s possible?
